C

close vowel ˌkləʊs ˈvaʊəl

In a close vowel the tongue is raised as close to the palate as is possible without producing fricative noise. Close vowels may be front (when the front of the tongue is raised), either unrounded [i] or rounded [y], or they may be back (when the back of the tongue is raised), either rounded [u] or unrounded [ɯ]. There are also close central vowels: rounded [ʉ] and unrounded [ɨ]. English i and u are often described as close vowels, but are rarely fully close in English accents. See also open.
