This course ( English Phonetics) is addressed to the First Year University Students. In this Course you will learn the definition of phonetics including its sub-branches, namely articulatory, acoustic and auditory. Since the aim of the course is to describe and classify English speech sounds, the course deals only with Articulatory Phonetics. That is, how sounds, including Vowels and Consonants, are produced using the different organs of speech. Knowing that, the learner is presented with the English inconsistencies between letters and sounds hence it is very important for the learner to distinguish between the two when dealing with Phonetics. The solution is to use the I.P.A system that represents the English sounds. It is worth mentioning that the accent used in the course is the British accent, namely the R.P (Received Pronunciation) also known as the BBC Accent. The course provides a full description of the sounds used in the R.P accent according to different criteria including, the position of the tongue, the shape of the lips (vowels), place and manner of articulation (consonants).
