      This a course that targets third year students of English at department of English language Setif 2 University. It was designed by Dr Haddaoui Soumia who has been teaching the module since 2021.

      As a common knowledge, any new language teaching theory depends on linguistic theory. Up until recently, the linguistics theories have faced three important phases; traditional grammar, structuralism and functionalism. There is a connection between these three methods and they are responsible for the transformation of language teaching theories.

      The Structuralist Approach in Teaching English Fichier

      The structuralist approach to learning spans across a broad spectrum of disciplines, including sociology, anthropology and language learning. The principles of structuralism are rooted in the theory that any major concepts within a discipline all fit together in a meaningful way.

    • Advantages:

      1) The first method to have a theory

      2) Making language teaching possible to large groups of learners

      3) Emphasizing sentence production

      4) Emphasizing control over grammatical structures

       5) Emphasizing development of oral ability

      8) Separation of language skills 

       Disadvantages:

      1) Lack of effectiveness

      2) Boredom caused by endless pattern drills

      3) Developing language like behavior instead of competence

      4) Learners having little control over their learning

      5) Teacher’s domination of the class
