Direct and indirect object

Définition

An object in grammar is a part of a sentence, and often part of the predicate. It refers to someone or something involved in the subject's "performance" of the verb.

Direct object

A direct object answers the question "what?" or "whom?"

Exemple

  • He loves football

  • The dog bit the postman.

  • The police have arrested three people.

  • Sally opened the door to the dining room

Indirect objects

Définition

Indirect objects are nouns or pronouns that identify to whom or for whom the action of the verb is performed. indirect object answers the question "to whom?", "for whom?", "for what?"

Exemple

A young boy showed her the way here.

Several friends have told me the same story.

The shop is sending my father a replacement.

You gave them no warning
