General Objective:
By the end of the course, students will be able to know and understand the correct production and description of English sounds and they are expected to apply the standard phonemic transcriptions of English words via using the IPA transcription skills, including composing a transcript, interpreting or reading transcriptions.
Specific Objectives:
1) Identify and explain the basic anatomy and physiology of the speech production mechanism.
2) Describe the principles of articulatory phonetics, including speech movements of the tongue, lips, jaw, and velum.
3) Demonstrate a basic knowledge of speech organs and recognize their functions.
4) Identify the voice mechanism and oro-nasal sounds.
5)Articulate and classify the English consonant speech sounds by the features of voicing place and manner of articulation.
6) Explain and classify vowel speech sounds based on the vowel quadrilateral diagram.
