Literature helps our understanding of human nature and how we respond to the challenges of life. The subject provides a variety of responses to human challenges and therefore helps increase our appreciation of life through the literary texts we read in different genres, periods and cultures. The knowledge and experiences gained in the study helps us deal with our own problems. Literature thus promotes the individual with the ability to appreciate any literary work set in prose, drama and poetry. Besides, it encourages the desire and love for reading for pleasure and knowledge. This love for reading leads to the competency in the use of the English language.

This course is intended to offer students an introduction to the historical and general features of English literature. Works taught will be representative of the main historical divisions of English literature, as well as its primary classifications. At the same time, this course will introduce students to the vocabulary and techniques of careful literary analysis.
